Navigating the NSW Home Energy Saver Program: Zero-Interest Loans & Discounts
The NSW Government's Home Energy Saver Program is officially open, backed by 557 million dollars in state funding designed to help households lower their power bills by making clean energy upgrades highly affordable.
While upgrading to solar and battery storage saves substantial money in the long run, the upfront cost has historically been the biggest barrier for local families. This program changes that.
As an accredited, approved vendor under the program, the team at Sunair Solar is here to make the transition simple, compliant, and stress-free.
What Does the Program Offer?
The initiative is split into two pathways, allowing you to access either a zero-interest loan, a direct discount, or a combination of both.
1. Zero-Interest Loans (Open Now)
Eligible homeowners and landlords can access interest-free finance of up to $15,000. Repayments can be spread over a term of up to 10 years, meaning the monthly savings on your electricity bill will often completely offset or exceed the cost of the loan.
2. Upfront Discounts (Opening Later in 2026)
Lower-income households and concession card holders can access direct discounts of up to $4,000 on approved upgrades.
Critical Rule: If you are eligible for both the discount and the loan, you must apply for the discount first. If you apply for and settle the zero-interest loan first, the government will not allow you to apply the discount to that same system retrospectively.
What Upgrades Can You Fund?
The program allows you to bundle several clean energy and efficiency upgrades into a single application. This includes:
Solar Power Systems: High-efficiency rooftop solar panels.
Solar Battery Storage: Store your excess solar power to use at night or during peak times.
EV Home Chargers: Smart Level 2 electric vehicle charging stations.
Switchboard Upgrades: Often necessary to safely support a new battery or EV charger.
Heating & Cooling: Energy-efficient reverse-cycle air conditioners.
Home Efficiency: Insulation, ceiling fans, and draught-proofing.
Who is Eligible?
To secure a zero-interest loan under the Home Energy Saver Program, you must meet the following criteria:
Property Ownership: You must own the NSW residential property. This applies to owner-occupiers and landlords alike. (Note: Renters are eligible for the upcoming discounts with written landlord and strata approval).
Household Income: Your combined annual household taxable income must be $210,000 or less.
Proof of Income: You will need to provide a copy of your official Notice of Tax Assessment from the ATO for the previous completed financial year.
Credit Approval: You must meet the credit and serviceability guidelines of the program's approved finance providers (such as Brighte or Plenti).
What About Commercial Projects?
If you run a local business on the Central Coast, the Home Energy Saver program is specifically reserved for residential properties and landlords. However, you can still save.
Businesses can access separate commercial incentives, such as the NSW Energy Savings Scheme (ESS), along with tailored commercial green finance. Sunair Solar regularly designs and installs large-scale commercial systems for local businesses (including warehouses, offices, and workshops) and we can guide you to the right commercial grants.
